You think you are confused because you don't know enough?
No, you are confused because you know too much. Nobody fails due to a lack of information.
Now, people have started failing due to an excess of information.
This cognitive overload phenomenon wasn't possible before the internet age.
Our ancestors faced information scarcity, while we face information toxicity that overwhelms our decision-making capacity.
The Starvation vs. Overeating
Basically, you are not dying from starvation.
You are dying from overeating. Just as physical overeating leads to sluggishness and disease,
Mental overeating through endless content consumption creates attention paralysis and mental fog that prevents clear thinking and decisive action.
The Knowledge-Achievement Disconnect
Nowadays, when I meet too many knowledgeable people, many of them are people who haven't achieved anything based on their knowledge till date.
Why?
There is a simple psychology behind this.
These individuals often become "knowledge collectors" rather than "knowledge appliers".
They confuse collecting knowledge with applying it, building their identity around what they know instead of what they do.
Fear-Based Learning vs Curiosity-Based Learning
Many times, you don't gather information because you are curious or want to learn.
Rather, you gather it because
You are afraid of taking action and you don't want to feel guilt due to not taking that action. This creates a psychological safety net where consuming information feels like making progress while actually serving as elaborate avoidance behavior that protects us from the vulnerability of trying and potentially failing.
The Productivity Illusion
That is why you
Listen podcasts
Watch motivational videos
Read about new industry or business tactics.
And that makes you feel productive, engaged, and even superior in a lot of cases.
This pseudo-productivity triggers the same neurochemical rewards as actual achievement, creating an addiction cycle where the brain craves more input instead of demanding output.
The Brain's Reward System Deception
The brain rewards consumption the same way it rewards action.
Because the brain feels like it has done the work.
But the truth is
Content consumption is not equivalent to actionAnd things can only change for you if you can take actions.
The Bandwidth Problem
Our brain does not have unlimited bandwidth.
More information will increase more choices. More choices will increase cognitive load, and that will create confusion and a lack of clarity.
Choice Paralysis
If you don't believe this, try setting a 3-minute timer and ordering food from Zomato, or deciding which movie to watch on Netflix. Or hasn't this ever happened to you that you thought,
'In this video, he is saying this, but in that video, he said something else?'
So what the hell should be done?
The Elimination Principle
Clarity is not the result of more input.
It's the result of deliberate elimination. It is also important to know what not to do.
The Contradiction Collection Problem
When you consume too much in, you collect more contradiction.
That's why people watch 50 videos on productivity and still can't get out of the way.
Breaking the Cycle
So now, what should we do?
Right?
I will tell you how to break this cycle in the next newsletter.
