Hey Ambitious,
Welcome to Elevate Letter!
If you're new here, this is the newsletter where every Sunday, I share the 5 best ideas I find each week to help you improve by 1% each day.
Letβs dive in!
Why You Feel Mentally Drained (And How to Fix It) Inspired by a powerful thread from Stephen Timoney
Most people donβt realize theyβre carrying a hidden mental load β and itβs killing their focus.
Itβs something Stephen Timoney calls βOpen Loops.β
What Are Open Loops?
Theyβre anything unfinished that tugs at your attention and clutters your mental space.
Often, theyβre not even on your to-do list β just lingering tasks or unresolved issues your brain keeps spinning on.
Examples include:
Unpaid bills
Half-read books
Projects started but never finished
Unresolved tension in relationships
Anything youβve left hanging
Stephen likens it to having dozens of tabs open on your computer β each one silently draining your energy and focus.
The Fix: A Simple 30-Minute Reset
Hereβs a quick method to start clearing the clutter:
Set a 30-minute timer.
Brain dump every open loop you can think of β big or small.
Do / Drop / Delegate:
Ruthlessly drop the 80% that no longer matters.
Delegate or do the remaining 20% within the next 14 days.
This exercise clears mental space and frees up your focus for deep, meaningful work.
Your challenge:
Take 30 minutes this week. List your open loops. Start closing them.
Your mind will thank you.
A decision-making filter for a better life
Obviously, there's a lot of nuance missing here.
But overall, this is a pretty dang good decision-making filter.
How to manage multiple interests - Video by Odysseas
I struggled with this for a long time.
I wanted to do EVERYTHING.
Reading, writing, drawing, making music, going to the gym, playing sports, creating content.
I had so many interests that I actually became paralyzed by the sheer number of options I had given myself.
Rather than making progress in any one area, I found myself spinning my wheels in a bunch of different ones.
This is the video I needed back then.
It lays out practical steps to manage multiple interests, including:
How to choose what matters most to you
How to manage your time (without burning out)
How to design a plan to maximize your interests
How to avoid shiny object syndrome
Let me know if you can relate to this feeling.
How to Get Luckier (Yes, Really) Inspired by a post from George Mack
This past week, I tried something different. Something... surprisingly powerful.
I challenged myself to strike up ten conversations a day with strangers β no agenda, no expectations.
In line at the cafΓ©
During my morning run club
Between sets at the gym
Just a quick compliment, a casual βHey, howβs your day going?β β simple human connection.
Why?
Because I want to increase my βluck surface area.β
I realized I wasnβt giving luck enough chances to find me.
Too much routine.
Too little randomness.
And randomness is often where the magic happens.
Were all the convos amazing? Not at all.
Some were awkward. Most were brief.
But hereβs what happened in just one week:
11 new contacts
4 great book recommendations
2 unexpected business opportunities
1 birthday party invite
None of that happens if I stay in my bubble.
Your turn:
Whatβs one way you could increase your luck surface area this week?
Try it for 7 days β then see what happens.
Iβd love to hear your results.
The truth about self-care
Self-care can look like this:
- A night of Netflix
- A pizza date with your partner
- Taking a long bath
It can also look like this:
- Going to the gym
- Cleaning up your apartment
- Cooking healthy meals in bulk
Thereβs no βrightβ way to recharge, listen to your body and do what works best for you.
Last Wordsπ
I love hearing from readers and I'm always looking for your feedback.
